Women in Engineering

We’re a proud supporter of Women in Engineering Network (WEN), a programme at the University of Auckland that helps inspire and empower engineering students who identify as female to achieve their aspirations.

WEN helps these students build connections with each other and with the industry, offers professional development opportunities, and helps foster diversity and inclusion in STEM subjects and careers.

WEN is committed to increasing the number of women enrolled in engineering, with the long-term goal of achieving gender equality.
 
Powerco is part of WEN’s industry mentoring programme, which helps students transition into internships and graduate roles. 

This year we have three mentors participating in the programme: Graduate Engineer Thomas Wan, Data Scientist Sophie Burgess and Gas Projects Delivery Manager Edwin Leong.

Sophie and Thomas travelled to the 2023 WEN launch event held in March to talk with students.

Sophie says the event was very engaging for both mentors and potential mentees.

“I enjoyed getting to know some of the students and telling them about Powerco, what we do and how their skillsets will be relevant.

“The energy was great, the presentations were entertaining and I think that Thomas, myself and other mentors encouraged and built some foundational relationships with a number of possible mentees in the programme. A few were interested in the internship programme after our conversations.

“It was very inspiring to talk to the organisers to hear what drives them to facilitate such a great concept as well.”
